MAYAA Rookies (Machine Pitch)
Players 8 years old or less as of May 1.
Rookie, Ages 6-8, continues the focus on building proper fundamentals of Baseball. The Rookie League is a machine pitch league for 6, 7, and 8 old players. Rookie League baseball is the first level that the players are introduced to competitive baseball. Though during the regular season scores aren’t kept, the innings are based on some of the same rules of the upper levels; three outs, strike outs, tag outs… The MAYAA Organization believes that the pitching machine provides a superior environment for kids learning to hit a ball thrown to the plate for the first time. Instead of coach pitch which introduces the human error element of potentially hitting a kid or on the other extreme throwing “lollipops” which doesn’t provide the type of experience that allows kids to learn to hit proper/realistic pitches. While focusing on providing exercises to allow the kids to obtain baseball skills, the ultimate goal is to make this a fun experience for all.
The Rookie level also provides the first opportunity for kids to be selected for All Star Teams. The All Star Teams play in tournaments during June after the regular season has completed.

Additional baseball situations and actions, such as walks and steals, will be introduced at this level. The players will have their first opportunity to pitch in live game situations. Along with emphasizing hitting and running by expanding on what has been taught at earlier levels, pitching and base running will become high priority lessons.
